Why does fluoride toothpaste carry a poison warning?
Turn over almost any regular toothpaste and you'll find it: a warning to use only a pea-sized amount for children, and to contact a poison control center if more than the amount used for brushing is swallowed. That warning exists because fluoride is meant to stay on the teeth — not be swallowed.
But young children can't reliably spit, and they love sweet flavours — so they swallow much of what's on the brush. Swallowing too much fluoride while the adult teeth are still forming under the gums can cause dental fluorosis: permanent white or brown mottling on the enamel, recognised by health authorities including the U.S. CDC.
